As a result, a chain of "friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps.

I guess Modiji is at most a third connection to most Indians. Someone you know or somone your friend/family knows must have seen him. In Trichy, an auto driver, a poor Brahmin who comes for Brahmanartham, a cab driver in Vazhavandhan Kottai know somone who had met/ seen him in close quarters or part of a small group that got to meet him. This was impossible until a decade ago.

This is possibile because, as a PM, Modi must have attended maximum number of events outside of Delhi. His aggressive campaigns and the organisational connect BJP/RSS has with the people makes him the most connected world leader.

It is good to see Annamalai using this approach in reaching out to the people. Again, the organisational support he gets to achive this is phenomenal.

But the connection doesn't stay just as a contact, but a slightly stronger connection is built due to the way the leaders interact with the people. Both the leaders don't meet people as a formality, but try to connect with them on a topic that's close to the other person. They listen to the common man or a Karyakarta and respond. The common man feels he's closer to the leader and that gets conveyed to his contacts.

Their public speeches give an impression that their communication is one way. But we do see that they have already connected with the audience.

Other aspiring leaders have a thing or two to learn from these two.
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-64550875576873653552024-02-02T10:51:00.000+05:302024-02-02T10:51:02.909+05:30Yes, we don't stop at 3. 40,000 is the goal
After that prana pratishta of Rama Janmabhoomi temple, J Saideepak made a statement on primetime TV that Hindus should reclaim the 40,000-odd temples usurped by the Islamists.

Both @Vishnu_Jain1 and I are not just looking at Kashi and Mathura; we are looking at 40000 sites; and no third party professing to represent Hindus can make any concession on behalf of those who want to reclaim these sites: @jsaideepak

Undaunted. Unflinching. Unshakable. pic.twitter.com/90720ZpO8o
— Anand Ranganathan (@ARanganathan72) January 30, 2024

As expected, a few elite Muslims argued against it that it would keep the country in a threatening confrontational mode.

In complete disagreement with this, it will keep the nation state of India in a 24/7 threatening confrontational mode. https://t.co/xSAFVKGZKX
— Khalid Baig (@KhalidBaig85) January 30, 2024

Then the neo Hindutvavaadis and the sundry Savarkarite began attacking Saideepak and Anand Ranganathan. They stand for Hindu unity and economic development. They are less concerned about the traditions - rather they use the term 'trad' derogatorily to refer to the traditionalists. They are probably afraid of differences within the Hindu communities or the impact of such a statement on international relations. There is a need to explain Saideepak to the opposing group.

40,000-odd temples were usurped by force, not by negotiating with the erstwhile Hindu rules or even the dharmakartas. The currency that helped in the act was obviously the military strength and political power of the Muslim rules. Centuries have elapsed since then. We have a legal system, a constitution, and a more or less functioning law and order machinery. These were jokes in the first 60 years of Indian democracy. The legal system was constantly influenced by the ruling government, the constitution was violated at the drop of a hat; law and order used to disappear when there were riots. No rioter was apprehended or punished till 2002. No government officials were pulled up for failing to act.

It has not changed altogether since 2014, but there are signs that law and order could be enforced; the judiciary can be independent; and the Constitution is respected. We may have to go a long way. But we have to improve these in the coming years. The point here is - confrontation expressed as street fights is no more easy. Average Muslims must understand this.

Saideepak's statement gives a fair chance to Muslims - to fight the cases in the courts of law. They have equal access to the judiciary, unlike the unfortunate Hindus during the Mughal and other Islamic periods. But I think his statement is directed more towards Hindus - to wake them up and not be content with electoral wins. There is work to be done on the civilizational side.

An average "educated" Hindu is at best, indifferent towards his tradition. In most cases, he hates his tradition of castes and rituals. Saideepak's stance on the Sabarimala issue was an eye-opener for most Hindus. I, as an indifferent Hindu began talking about the Sampradaya to my son who was looking at the issue as a liberal Hindu. There is a need to convert the hater to at least the indifferent level and the indifferent to an activist. By activist, I mean someone knowledgeable about his tradition, and has a balanced view of castes, rituals, and customs. We need to elevate Hindus from being Whatsapp-message-forwarding uncles and aunties. More Hindus need to create more good quality content; to start with, they should be able to engage with opposing views within the family on topics like rituals and customs. Or they can start with knowing the temples that must be reclaimed near their homes; read about their history, look for documentary proofs of demolition or illegal occupation, and so on.

At a political level, we need to have goals. Advaniji set the goal of one temple, Modiji influenced the masses to set the goal of 3 and Saideepak is setting the goal for 40,000. Without such goals, the energy of the political Hindu will be wasted in hairsplitting conversations on economic policies and election strategies.

It might take us a hundred years to win back the 40,000 temples. Most of us would have been gone by then. But having such a goal is important for the Hindus. One may disagree with Saideepak on the direction in which he wants Hindus to proceed; express that disagreement, and be civil about it. Abusing him or ridiculing his cause would in no way help the Hindu agenda.
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-79608244814079282042024-01-25T11:03:00.001+05:302024-01-25T11:03:44.687+05:30Rama for the uprooted and deracinated

In my earlier blog, I equated the Ramayana with the Bible and the Quran. Rama, with his wife Seetha and step-brother Lakshmana, left for the forest. They lived a life of a wanderer with no comforts. Seetha was kidnapped by Ravana, a powerful king of Lanka. Rama earned the trust and friendship of Sugreeva by killing Sugreeva's brother Vali. With the help of Sugreeva's army and a brilliant and strong minister Hanuman, Rama approached Lanka. Ravana's brother Vibhishana left him and joined Rama's side. The army reached Lanka and fought with Ravana's army. An average Westerner could understand religion only through the prism of Abrahamic faiths. It needs a God (Jehovah or Allah), a Prophet (Jesus, Mohammad), a holy book, and of course an organization (Church, Caliphate, and its offshoots). The dilemma for a Hindu, especially a reasonably knowledgeable Hindu is - how can you summarize various philosophies, deities, practices, and the Hindu community into a simple template!

I guess this was the reason for the continuous spread of Abrahamic faiths into pagan communities. (Let’s set aside the conversion by sword for the sake of this article.) Even in impoverished, isolated Hindu communities that had lost touch with their deities, a simple message of a God through a preacher was sufficient to convert them to Christianity. (Let’s set aside the conversion by coaxing with incentives.)

I see the events of January 2024 as the restoration of a dharmic order to counter the Adharmic Abrahamic faiths. If we can present a simple religion along the lines of Abrahamic faiths, the fight will be more or less on equal terms. We had many prophets and saints. None was as successful as Sri Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada who built a reasonably successful organization and took Rama and Krishna to the Westerners and intellectual Hindus. Swami and the saints before him used Bhakti. Rama wasn't a saint, but a warrior. We need more practical aspects of life to spread the message of Rama. Rama’s honor, sacrifice, courage, justice, and duty are relevant to a practical man even today.

Then who would be the Prophet of Rama who can spread the message of honor, sacrifice, courage, justice, and duty? At a higher state of consciousness, when it transcends time, one discovers that an object or a process means much more than its physical state. Since this discovery happened when time was not a factor, he believes the physical entity or process would continue to give that experience. So, he begins treating it sacred. It doesn't do anything special other than its intended purpose, but by treating it as holy, man can experience uplifting emotions. It does, by coming to his aid by comforting him through the ups and downs of his life.

Good habits, value systems, and rituals with their sacredness passed on across generations help keep families together. Physical objects like portraits of deities, elders, and objects passed on for generations evoke an emotion that makes people value the institution called family. They evoke emotions that are valuable for the family. The same can be extended to the societies as well. There, the scale of sacred things changes as societies are made of families.

Religion is vital in keeping them together with its sacred icons and systems. The sense of sacredness arises at a higher consciousness and religions do make use of them at a practical level. Then sacred things and religions enrich each other.

To a Hindu, there are innumerable sacred things, from cows to rituals to symbols, books, and tools. For example, with a sense of gratitude towards the cow, a Hindu venerates it. It is not that someone declares that the cow is holy; instead, individuals experience gratitude toward the cow and then it is treated as holy. A society that doesn't have such noble experiences would have fewer sacred things. Camels in Arabia are almost as useful as the cows in India, but camels are not treated as holy.

What happens when there is an absence of sacredness?

The two materialistic ideologies of communism and capitalism have no room for holiness. We have seen how they destroyed the environment, families, societies, and individuals. We can simply look around to see the effects of this profanity. Look at the conditions of families in irreligious societies. And look at the lives of people in prisons and mental asylums.

Religions and sacred things enrich each other. But in Islam, there are very few sacred items - like the Quran, Mecca, the pilgrimage, and the act of prayer. It does not allow designating anything else as sacred. That makes them treat everything else as unholy and gives them the license to destroy them. On the contrary, a Hindu with his innumerable sacred things attempts to give the same kind of respect to other religions' sacred icons. You can't find a Hindu celebrating the burning of the Quran; because to him, every book is sacred.

Where are we heading?

Due to wokeism or plain laziness, we, the midde-upper-middle-class Hindus are losing the sense of sacredness. Weddings and other rituals are treated as just events to celebrate and photo ops. There is hardly any respect for sacredness in the way rituals are done. Temples are considered places of tourism; we don't even want to follow the rules prescribed for each temple. Religious marks like Bindi, Namam, and Vibhuthi are becoming rare. Most Jathis have abandoned their sacred threads; more married women feel liberated without their mangal sutra. So, at an individual and family level, we are heading towards destruction. The society will follow.

A Tirtha yatra is supposed to connect people as the pilgrim travels the lengths and breadths of this country. With the Tirthas destroyed and temples becoming tourist places, what remains of these pilgrimages? In the guise of development, water bodies and forests which were considered sacred by the ancients are being developed into concrete structures. There is nothing wrong with development if it benefits people in the material world, but losing sacred things will destroy the binding forces in society.

If that's what we want, that's what we will get.

Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-56717229042873280962023-10-15T10:10:00.000+05:302023-10-15T10:10:00.114+05:30Celebrate Navaratri and protect your kids from liberalism

In a WhatsApp group, one friend called it as a Protein festival; another called it a pro-teen festival. How true! Our festivals can be fun for the teens and can also keep them connected with our roots. More importantly, they can prevent them from becoming a toxic liberal. Here are some to-dos for parents and grandparents to protect their children from the toxicity of liberalism.

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, right to private property, and equality before the law. The fundamental problem of liberalism is its total disconnect from reality, aesthetics, and all good things that come from traditions.

Some of the ideals of liberalism were always there, not at a practical or social level but at a more spiritual level. The practical world is a lot different and it can be a mess if ideals of the spiritual world are applied without proper understanding. Humans are inherently good and religions with a God as a basis try to direct wayward people to a path that enriches the society. Liberalism works against the fundamentals of a society. Right of the individual, liberty, and other principles of liberalism break down established institutions like family and community.

The communities that became less religious resulted in the rise of liberalism. Some of the examples are - migrant Jews, migrant Hindus, and Europeans who abandoned Christianity. Which communities are less prone to produce liberals? Muslims, religious Christians, orthodox or traditional Jews, and Hindus. Humans need a sense of belonging to be connected with others. For this sense of belonging, he gives up on some of his individual rights and liberty to in a family and community.

But what is so attractive to kids that makes them liberals? Teens tend to be idealistic. Liberalism is an attractive choice as it also allows for greater personal freedom. A life free of control from the parents and the society is very attractive to a teen. So, he or she tends to take that absolute freedom as an ideal along with its paraphernalia present in liberalism. It is an illusion that liberalism promotes individual rights and liberty; but by becoming a liberal, one gets enslaved by its ideals. He is also bound by the group of people who believe in such an ideology. It is as if liberalism tries to replace religion. In the process, it breaks down families and societies.

We understand the damage it causes to the society. So, let's move on to factors that work against it. The absolute freedom that liberalism advocates is probably the only one to be countered. There is no such thing as absolute freedom even if it does not harm others.

The best vaccination against liberalism is religiosity. Try to be as religious as possible; at the same time, do not overdo it to trigger a hatred for religion. Insist on symbols, habits, and rituals specific to your community. These are clearly against individual liberty. Kids should learn that by giving up some individual liberty, they get the comfort of belonging to a family and a society. They should know that values like cooperation, and acceptance of differences are the ones that sustain the human race - not uncontrolled individual liberty.

Symbols are easy to follow. Loss of symbols is the first step towards liberalism. If a mother gives up on Sindhur, the daughter might color her hair; if the mother gives up on bangles, the son might wear them. Mothers play a bigger role than the father, in retaining symbols. Unless you want the children to not conform to an order, do not give up the symbols of your community.

Habits may be affected by the lifestyle, which is affected by habitat. The farther one moves away from his community, the higher the risk of losing the habits. Minimize such risks by living closer to your native place as much as possible. Try to maintain the habits you had when you were young - like feeding the crows, observing fasting, and celebrating festivals with the seriousness your ancestors may have had.

Coming to rituals, insist on active rituals like chanting, singing, going to temples, or performing Pooja over passive ones like listening and meditation. The long sermons Christians got to listen to in their Sunday masses must have driven them away from Christianity in Europe. Meditations must have bored most Buddhists. Irrespective of whether an expressive ritual uplifts an individual or not, it is important to note that he or she is kept busy and the mind is not idled to be converted to a devil's workshop - at least for that hour or so.

In addition to giving a sense of comfort with the self and belonging to the family, these will build an affinity towards the community. Such affinity will define the boundary for individual liberty. Individual rights and liberty can't exist at the cost of family and community relationships will be stressed. Other pillars of liberalism will come crashing down once these limitations are experienced and understood.

In Homam, Hindus seek blessings from Ishta Devataa, Kula Devataa, Grama Devataa, and other deities that influence our lives. If my friend is right, either these rituals are not part of the religion or religion is not only personal but includes clans and lands. The latter is more likely to be true. Of the Devataas mentioned here, the Grama Devataa is the most relevant one for this topic. Grama Devataa is supposed to unite the people of a village - defined by some boundaries on land. They are the Kshetrapalas - protectors of the land, its people, and its flora and fauna. The connection between the deity and the land continued even in urban contexts. Rich and powerful people donated land to those temples. People living around the temple respected the landowner and performed their duties to the temple. There were flower suppliers, musicians, and dancers who performed for the temple deity and maintenance workers who ensured the upkeep of the place. We have so far covered the connection between the land and the deity.

Holy Places

Mahabharatam, considered a Hindu epic has two interesting episodes describing the geography of Bharata and its holy places. Dhaumya, the priest of the Pandavas describes various holy places (Thirta) to the Pandavas. Narada does the same when he visits them in the forest. They advise the Pandavas to visit those Thirtas for 'personal' reasons of earning punya and getting rid of Papa. More scholarly Hindus may identify these sections as later-day insertions and were not part of Vyasa's work. Even if that were true, why does a religious text mention these places? Because religion is not separate from the land and its features. From a religious angle, our mountains are sacred, our rivers are sacred and our forests are sacred. (An interesting question - If forests are sacred, why did Krishna order the destruction of the Kandava forest? Feel free to find fault with Krishna - we don't issue Fatwas. We are Hindus. A discussion on this event should elevate one's understanding of the Hindu world.)

Nation and Land

Wikipedia (I know, I know) says, "The consensus among scholars is that nations are socially constructed, historically contingent, and organizationally flexible." In the absence of Indic contributors getting recognized even in India, this is a Western notion of a nation. The Wikipedia article on 'Nation' doesn't stress the territory part. Don't Hindus, the majority in India, need their definition of a Nation - at least their Nation? The Western notion speaks of the nation only for the people - not for the environment, not for the land and definitely does not speak for other living beings. But India, that is Bharat is different. Our National Anthem praises the land and appears to be very different from the anthems of many countries. (Interestingly Bangladesh's National Anthem written by the same Tagore praises the produce of Bengal and the season. It's a bit melancholic, but I love it.) It was from this kind of Hindu mind came the idea of Bharata Mata - the nation as a deity to be worshipped.

If the nation is in people's interest, it must include people's beliefs. The history of Christianity and Islam is all about how they conquered lands and not how personal those religions are or how enlightened their adherents are. It is good to go overseas, learn new things, make a lot of money, and live a life of comfort. They are building temples there. Let them not take just the architecture from India, let them take the sense of sacredness as well from India. It would be great if overseas Hindus consider the rivers, mountains, and valleys in their adopted land as sacred as Ganga, Kaverai, and Hrishikesh. In the process, they might discover the Kshetrapala and Thirtapala of those lands. That is the Akhand Bharat I like to see.
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-42409820289034605482023-07-19T18:40:00.000+05:302023-07-19T18:40:16.954+05:30Smarter Tools and Dumber Consumers
Our morning walk topic turned to the gen-next and its dependence on tools, especially Google Maps. We regularly see drivers missing the signs on the roads when following Google Maps. A late turn here and missed turn there make the driver look lost. We see an absence of common sense and over-reliance on the maps for directions. We wondered how we managed to find our ways over two decades ago. We used to read the map and memorize the directions to the best of our abilities, supplemented by small notes in case our memory failed. Most importantly, the focus was on how to not miss a turn. We would remember the street that proceeds the one that we must take.

But every generation goes through the learning of new tools. Why do we complain when the next generation uses maps? This article is an attempt to identify the missing factor - learning.

Let me take the field I am most familiar with - programming. Generations before mine used assembly programming before high-level languages were created. It definitely made our lives a lot easier. But we also picked up the nuances of the languages. We spent hours optimizing the code, making it more readable, ensuring standards, and so on. We were the users of the tool. A few brilliant programmers identified the shortcomings of one language and tried addressing them in a new language that they could create. The cycle continued and now we have more complex software developed in a much shorter time. There is also an overall improvement in the quality of software.

Such an improvement is also seen in Google Maps. The audio cues are getting better, and the reroutings are getting smarter. The system became more intelligent because of its usage by consumers. Yes, they are different from the users of the tools mentioned in the previous paragraph. These are not users who improve the tool by their conscious usage, but consumers who make mistakes that are used by the system to improve itself. This led to the statement - that the phones got smarter and the people got dumber.

The question is - can the consumers of Google Maps become users who consciously improve it? It may be possible for a few heavy users to figure out the nuances of the tool and improve upon them. But Google will do a lot better than them. It has data from millions of consumers from around the world. It has the systems in place to learn about the mistakes they commit and possibly a team of analysts who figure out the deficiency in the software and fix it much before the smart individuals can act.

Machine intelligence will gain with the stupidity of the consumers.
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-83800601671417898552023-07-04T18:51:00.000+05:302023-07-04T18:51:05.481+05:30I am a Bhakt and I am against UCC
Yes. You read it right.

RSS might think that the UCC is a brilliant idea to unite Hindus. The BJP might think it appears like a good stick to beat the Muslims and get Hindu votes. I think both are shortsighted if not totally wrong.

First, let's look at the political angle. If UCC becomes a law, Muslims would continue to ignore it like an average Indian ignores traffic laws. The interesting part is, even for a traffic law violation, our Police would hesitate to act if the violator wears a skullcap and sports a beard. So, as in traffic law violation, it would be the Hindus who would be punished if they violate UCC. In other words, UCC could be the new tool of an aggressor to target only Hindus.

Coming to the social issue, we are so diverse that each community has evolved its customs and traditions over hundreds of years. Some are social, and some could even be biological. I qualify it as 'could be' as there is no documented scientific proof but observation over generations. For example, the optimum age for marriage and pregnancy. Social and biological factors play their roles in this factor and every community should have the room to decide on this.

The marriage age is already becoming an issue in impoverished regions of the country. Poor girls in the age group of 16-18 are lured by love jihadists here and there, get converted and the Romeos are rarely touched by our laws. And there is a need to protect denominational groups. If they have the custom to marry off their daughters (not consummate) before 18, they have to face the heat from law enforcement agencies - of course only if they are Hindus.

Let's take an example of a community that has a genetic condition that increases the probability of infertility with age. If that community observes it for a few decades and chooses to address it by lowering the marriage age, it is already considered a violation of the Child Marriage Act. Unfortunately, we do not accept a traditional view if there is no "modern scientific study".

Our laws are no match for community-derived wisdom. UCC will reject all such wisdom and would be selectively used to target enemies. A few examples of such misuses are painstakingly documented by Deepika Narayan Bharadwaj and Shubham Sharma.

So, here is a word of caution to my fellow Bhakts - tread with caution. Be careful what you wish for.

Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-68393717493254489042023-06-27T19:43:00.001+05:302023-06-27T19:43:12.838+05:30Marrying outside of one's community
I was approached by a parent with two children of marriageable age who needed my help. The children had asked why they shouldn't marry outside of their community, and the parent didn't know how to respond. I provided the following answer:

Every community has its own customs, behaviors, and lifestyles, including food habits and tastes. Some of these customs differ greatly between communities. For example, in North India, it is customary for a woman to cover her head as a sign of respect to elders in the family. However, in many South Indian communities, covering the head is not required and is even considered inauspicious.

In traditional societies, marriage is not just a relationship between two individuals, but between two families. When a person from a different community is brought into a community, these customs can cause problems. While these differences can be overlooked or compromised during the excitement of getting married, they can become serious issues in daily life. Additionally, a person from a different community may not value one's customs, which can put the relationship at risk. As marriage is a lifetime commitment, we prefer to marry within the community to avoid these risks.

The main factor here is avoiding risk. By doing so, Indian/Hindu communities have maintained the institution of family for centuries.

Nowadays, communities have taken on a new definition. There are profession-based communities, such as those of doctors or bureaucrats. Marrying within these communities but outside of traditional communities based on language, religion, and caste can reduce friction, but not eliminate it entirely. This is because a person enters a profession-based community only in their twenties, but has been part of their traditional community since childhood. Therefore, marrying within the traditional community is still important to avoid risks.

If the children want to marry outside of the community, my suggestion to their parents is to not be too hard on them. Try to convince them against it if they haven't made a final decision, but don't fight too hard to stop the marriage. Doing so could leave everyone feeling bitter, regardless of the outcome.

<Text quality improved by Grammarly>
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-28241918676113084632023-05-03T21:01:00.001+05:302023-05-03T21:01:31.109+05:30Decision Dilemma and Death
Mother had been unconscious for more than a day. The neuro surgeons didn't give much hope. Mother was too frail to withstand surgery and surgery doesn't guarantee a recovery. The notices pasted on the walls of the neurologists' hospital waiting rooms stress the fact the the treatment doesn't guarantee a success. (Fair enough. With such confidence level, I wish allopathy evangelists are sympathetic to alternate systems.)

What appeared to us, her sons and daughter as an easy decision didn't appear to be so to many other families with their elderly in critical condition. The healthcare system and to some extent doctors avoid using the D word. Maybe because the common man doesn't accept death as a reality.

All the elders in my family understood the inevitability of death. When my grandfather had a heart attack, he sent back the doctor named Easwaran. He said, "I don't need Dr. Easwaran, I'm waiting for the real Easwaran". Just a week before his death, an uncle declared that he had a highly satisfied life and was ready to go...preferably to depart from Trichy. My father declined to buy a warranty for his eye glasses as he had no warranty for his life. Mother wanted a quick death like a few relatives; she wasn't as lucky as them, but she must have been quite satisfied as she must have felt no pain and spent just four days in hospital.

Does the next generation have such a perspective? Losing someone close to us is definitely sorrowful. But can we escape it? How long can we run before that sorrow catches up? In the process of deferring the death of a close one, are we denying their dignity? Is it ok to tie a person for months or years to bed just because we don't want them to die? How do we want to remember them after their inevitable death - as a busy cheerful person or as a weak helpless bedridden person?
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-59541278894189672342022-12-08T09:35:00.002+05:302022-12-19T16:16:20.034+05:30Ye Bleddy Indians
<img border="0" data-original-height="5007" data-original-width="3338" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisY3M2Z2TBg9M3v8lGAs0rZjKwbZs1vRAC8g66c59CIiaFWFxZSUFga1NR6fFx33NeYijnC9MQ0as3gd01qtUQbPOAB0PWiAyHi6dc_wZhyK1MQrlcFAQEn79AcmlZIVGQPjDWNRoyUdZwlHx7RBpp2ADqj1c6CXJKMeOXzehw_pBaN2LgBy0/w213-h320/john-salvino-bqGBbLq_yfc-unsplash.jpg" title="Photo by John Salvino on Unsplash" width="213" />

Photo by John Salvino on Unsplash

During the morning walk, a neighbor narrated his experience visiting a mutual friend in Chennai. That friend lived in a modern apartment complex. The visitor (note - the term visitor, which is more universal comprising various visitors like guests, vendors, and business associates) has to seek permission to visit by giving the day and time of the visit. The resident (the term could have been host) must register that in a system with the visitor's mobile number. An OTP will be generated before the scheduled visit and sent to the visitor. The visitor must share the OTP at the gate with the security person. The security person would also take a picture of the visitor before he can proceed to meet the resident.

Such a painful system with possible errors and failures every step of the way. It cries out "We do not trust you bleddy Indians."

This isn't just about the high-profile apartment complexes but is actually adopted from high-security IT companies. About a decade ago, I had to meet a few friends in a company in one such IT zone. I could walk from my home and so I had no money or wallet or any id with me. Luckily, just before I reached the gate, a friend was driving by, saw me, and took me inside the campus. No questions asked. Otherwise, I'd have to go through a huge hassle to enter the campus. There will be additional security at every corner and each company employs a few security guards themselves. I began working for the company and wrote multiple times to the campus administration to fix the terrible experience visitors and candidates face at the gate.

Apparently, no "bleddy" Indians find it insulting and demeaning. If security is a key concern, why can't they ensure it with a better user experience?

The answer lies in our inherited coloniality. The Brits and then the neo-Brits treated every Indian as someone out to steal from the government. For every transaction with the government, the bleddy Indian needs to prove that he's so and so and he is the rightful recipient of the product or service. In the process, a few citizens learned a few tricks to trick the government. There are fake identity cards, duplicate ration cards, fake caste certificates, fake degrees, etc. It went beyond fake documentation and there were innovative ways to cheat - like making phone calls from a friend's office, bribing the telephone linesman for unmetered calls (remember Jaspal Bhatti's famous episode on Lineman Damaad), and something as cheap as using a coin tied to a string to make free phone calls from coin-operated booths.

The government treated people with distrust and some people proved that the government was right by their actions.

Technology began to change things. Cheating for a phone call has almost disappeared with an intermediate step of missed call messaging. Positive human interaction is beginning to show up in a few places. The ticket examiners in trains do not insist on seeing the passenger's identity card if he is convinced that the passenger is genuine.

Why can't apartment complexes and IT companies improve the user experience? A simple note-book based entry and exit is probably sufficient in most cases. Businesses may need to do ID and purpose validation. But all these changes are possible only if the enforcer wishes to treat other Indians as equals.

When will we get there?

But this could be true. Here is an explanation.

First an anecdote:

The last two organizations I worked in had an identical problem regarding lateral hires for senior roles - like Architects, Program Managers, etc. The roles demanded domain/technology-specific skills, communication/writing skills, interpersonal skills, a good understanding of customers' business, etc. Too many people came and none survived for more than a few months. After years of frustrating search, it dawned upon me that those who survived the grind in the organization had something in common - they all had competed in some all-India level exams - like JEE, CAT, or equivalent. They didn't necessarily go to an IIT or IIM. It is the effort put in to compete in an all-India level exam in open-category that made the difference. And those who failed did not face such exams earlier in their lives but managed to gain 10-15 years of experience in the industry, thanks to the big IT companies.

Now for some data:

I took the list of Indians who were CEOs in multinationals of the western world from Top 30 CEOs Of Indian Origin Who Are CEOs Of Best Multinational Companies - Inventiva. The list is not exhaustive. Many well-known entrepreneurs have graduated from IITs and NITs or RECs. But this list has only 30, of which 22 were born and had their college education in India; 10 were from IIT, 3 from BITS Pilani, 2 from Manipal Institute, 3 from St. Stephens College Delhi, and 1 from Shri Ram College Delhi.

IITians go through tough competition is a well-known fact. IITs began their JEE after 1961. I do not have any data on IITians who graduated in the 1950s and went on to lead multinational companies.

Also, those who went to Manipal or BITS went there just because they didn't qualify for IITs or NITs. The competition for admission to St. Stephens and Shri Ram college are well known. The common thread is, they all competed at an all-India level for their undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

So, competing with more applicants helps in some way later in life, even if the candidate failed in getting admission to prestigious institutions.

What happens to a competition when there is a reservation?

For those in OC: More candidates try to squeeze through a smaller entrance. The competition gets tougher. The preparation is more rigorous.

For those in Reserved Categories: The entrance is relatively wider. The competition exists but is within a group of communities. The communities for which reservation is available are not known for prioritizing higher education like the so-called Forward communities; So, fewer people from reserved communities attempt the tests, the threshold is lowered and so the overall effort in preparation is relatively less for a candidate from reserved communities.

Considering two candidates of equal caliber and achievement in their school curriculum, the one from OC needs to put in more effort as compared to a candidate from a community that benefits from the reservation. The result of the entrance test is immaterial when it comes to reaching greater heights in life.

The OC candidate having trained better for a tougher competition continues to stay ahead of the other. The immediate success the other candidate gets definitely helps in his social status, but fails to take him to the heights the other one can reach.

I would like to know of people who benefited from reservation earlier in their life and rose to lead a multi-national organization later to prove me wrong.
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11485813.post-71117898703600998952022-10-30T09:26:00.004+05:302022-10-30T10:42:33.753+05:30

I see Sunak becoming the PM as an extraordinary event as no one else came forward to run a country that is a mess. Even in Britain, it is almost impossible for a Muslim to be the head of state.

Let me generalize the statement. "It is almost impossible for a Muslim to be a head of state in democracy in a multi-cultural country." Why?

In all democracies, whether Parliament or Presidential, the representative has to be elected twice before leading the nation. In a Presidential system like the US, party delegates vote for the Presidential candidate before the candidate seeks votes from the general public. In a Parliamentary system the order changes - he gets elected from his constituency and then gets elected by the party as a leader.

Take the case of a Muslim candidate in a Presidential system. For him to be an acceptable leader, the delegates must vote for him to be the Presidential candidate. As long as he maintains a Muslim identity, it is impossible to win the candidature from the party colleagues. So, he has to shed his identity and has to be seen as one among the people of that country - pretty difficult for a Muslim as his allegiance to his god supersedes his allegiance to his country. Even if he manages to win the candidature of his party colleagues, it is an uphill task to convince people in a multicultural society.

In the case of a Parliamentary system, he can probably win his constituency fairly easily if the majority of voters are Muslims. In that case, it is likely that his opponent may also be a Muslim. To impress Muslim voters, he has to play his Muslim card and not be a leader for all. He has to be a leader for Muslims first. Only then he can win his constituency of a few hundred thousand people. If he manages to win, it is highly likely that his colleague legislators would be suspicious of him because of the strong Muslim identity that he used to win. That would prevent him to be the leader of his party in the Parliament.

There is one case in which a Muslim can lead the government. If the party that won the majority has a super PM like Sonia Gandhi, a Muslim can hope to lead the government. The super PM decides on the leader of the party and everyone falls in line. This is unlikely to happen in matured democracies and matured democratic parties.

That is how India had Presidents like Fakruddin Ali Ahmed, Zakir Hussain, etc. Kalam was different as he rarely projected his Muslim identity. In fact, most Muslims do not see him as their man. His detachment from the Muslim community was the primary reason that made NDA consider him as their Presidential candidate.

Yes, there is a limit to which a Muslim politician can rise but that is constrained only by his identity and his people - not by the multicultural society he is part of.

If you are a Muslim in a multicultural society and have high political ambitions, try returning to the religion of your ancestors. "I like it this way. We, as Hindus have such freedom and no one issues a death threat to us." replied the girl, who knew her Hindutva. I pitched in.

"Good that you know your freedom. Do you know there are various stages of freedom?"

The girl hesitated, the elder who asked the question first helped her. "We have the freedom to choose our Gods. One day you feel like worshipping Meenakshi and the next day you feel like worshipping Krishna. Or, you may choose to not worship at all. In Abrahamic religions, people don't have that freedom."

"Does it mean there are no atheists in Islam or Christianity?" asked the girl.

"Yes, for example, the punishment for apostates is death in Islam," said the elder.

I added:

"By exercising this little freedom now, you may be giving up the larger freedom of the next generations. Do you realize?"

"When you don't follow small rituals, you can't get your children to follow them. In two generations, they may be left with no tradition to call their own. In the absence of comforting rituals and symbols, ideologies enter to fill the gap. In their moments of weakness, Abrahamic religions enter and take away the higher levels of freedom. As a Hindu, you are exercising the lower levels of freedom, and only as a Hindu, you can get to the higher levels of freedom. The important life goal for a Hindu is to aspire for the highest levels of freedom. Look around the people in other religions now. Do you think they have freedom - higher or lower? What do they have to claim culture and aesthetics as their own? Do you want that to happen to your children or grandchildren?"

I hope the girl gets the message. I believe this is one of the reasons for the spread of Christianity in Hindu and Pagan communities. A few hundred years ago, most Jathis used to wear the sacred thread. Now, see which Jathi resists Christianity the most.

As people migrate, they don't get to follow their traditions in their new environments. They can't wear their religious symbols; they can't celebrate their festivals. Their culture remains only in their memory, that too for just a generation.

Look at the rise of wokeness in migrated communities that are no more in touch with their traditions. Wokeness is just as bigoted as the Abrahamic religions.

As Hindus, if we don't take our symbols and rituals seriously now, there won't be anything to call Hindu culture; worse - it would be communism, liberalism, or Abrahamic faiths that would be running riot (sometimes literally) in our societies.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Before we talk about Internet Hindus, listen to the story of Satyakaman in Tamil or read it in English here.

In current times, the debate centers around the definition of Brahmin or about honesty. In a way, we, the people of today look for a Śabda Pramāṇa - that is proof from well-recognized texts. In the recent past, people may have looked for a Upamāna Pramāṇa. That is, when a situation demands, this story may be compared to arrive at a resolution.

The purpose of all these stories, Purana and our Itihasa aren't just for proof. They have served a much bigger purpose than just referencing texts like the Bible or the Quran. (Grammarly suggested changes from 'a Bible' to 'the Bible' and 'a Quran' to 'the Quran'. That explains the difference between a Hindu system of values and an Abrahamic system of values.)

The lives of our Puranic characters are examples for us to follow. They aren't rule books. There are diverse situations and personalities to guide us through the challenges of our lives.

The Internet Hindus are stuck in proofs and references. A 'trad' or a traditional Hindu would reject the story of Satyakaman and stick to his definition of who a Brahmin is. But a 'rayta' would agree with the decision of the master Gauthama and continue his tirade against the trads.

What we seldom realize is - the characters in these stories guide us in our lives. The characters Satyakaman and his mother Jabala are straightforward - honest to the core. The relevant character for Internet Hindus is the master Gautama. He defined who a Brahmin is, for himself. He didn't need any Pramāṇa to decide. He was free from acquired knowledge.

That's what a Hindu is - someone who can aspire and get that freedom from the bindings - including that of knowledge. And that's what Internet Hindus should aim for.
Sridharhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08903225715273678219noreply@blogger.com1
