Enlightened ... There are no special effects.

Recently some of the Hindutva scholars had a spat on Twitter (X) about the period of Sri Rama.  Someone said it is around 5000 years ago, others disagreed and it was going through the usual motions of a Twitter war.   Unlike a Christian or a Muslim, the historicity of Hindu Gods do not matter to the theology of Hindus.  Hindu Dharma does not run the risk of losing its relevance if these Gods were not historical figures.  Because Hindu Dharma does not depend on the physical existence of the Gods, but depends on the values and wisdom of these Gods.  Their physical representation is a personification of their values.  Sri Rama represents honor, sacrifice, courage, duty and justice; Sri Krishna represents the wisdom for the worldly life stressing on the importance of duty. Social media, especially Twitter has people taking extreme sides on castes, there are hardly any conversations but a lot of noise. Here's my attempt to give a perspective on where we are and the way forward.  Context I'm a Brahmin by the standard definition of a Brahmin - born in a Brahmin family, brought up a Brahmin and I continue to try to be a Brahmin. I rever the Vedas and all the traditions - some of which aren't  Brahminical.  I can be stamped a 'trad' and my views can be brushed aside. சில வரலாறு தொடர்பான புத்தகங்களை மொழிபெயர்க்க வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. அதின் மூலம் வெகுஜனங்களைக் குறி வைத்து எழுதப்படும் வரலாறு பற்றி புரிந்தது. வரலாறும் பிற ஆராய்ச்சித் துறைகளைப் போல வறண்டதே. அசாத்திய பொறுமையும் ஊகிக்கும் திறனும் இருந்தால் வரலாற்றை ஓரளவுக்குப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும்.   அதை வெகுஜனங்களிடையே எடுத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்றாலும் அதற்காக அடிப்படைகளில் கை வைக்கக் கூடாது.  வரலாற்றுக் கட்டுரையை தினத்தந்தி தலைப்பு போல எழுதுவது ஆராய்ச்சிக்கு இழைக்கப்படும் அநீதி.   பொது மக்கள் வரலாற்றை மறந்து விடக்கூடாது என்பதற்காக இலக்கியங்கள் பயன்பட்டன.  அவை வரலாற்றை சுவாரஸியமாக்கின. உதாரணத்திற்கு நமது இதிகாசங்கள்.  வெவ்வேறு காலகட்டத்தில் அவற்றில் உப கதைகள் சேர்க்கப்பட்டு, பல்வேறு கால சரித்திரங்கள் அவற்றில் மறைந்துள்ளன.   மகாபாரதப் போரில் பாண்டியர்கள் பங்கு பெற்றனர் என்பது உண்மையா, பொய்யா என்று தெரியாது.  ஆனால், மகாபாரதம் எழுதப்பட்ட போது, பாண்டியர்கள் தென்னாட்டில் ஆதிக்கம் செலுத்தினர்;  அவர்கள் வட நாட்டிலும் புகழ் பெற்றிருந்தனர் என்று தெரிகிறது....
