Ye Bleddy Indians

During the morning walk, a neighbor narrated his experience visiting a mutual friend in Chennai.  That friend lived in a modern apartment complex.  The visitor (note - the term visitor, which is more universal comprising various visitors like guests, vendors, and business associates) has to seek permission to visit by giving the day and time of the visit.  The resident (the term could have been host) must register that in a system with the visitor's mobile number.  An OTP will be generated before the scheduled visit and sent to the visitor.  The visitor must share the OTP at the gate with the security person.  The security person would also take a picture of the visitor before he can proceed to meet the resident.

Such a painful system with possible errors and failures every step of the way. It cries out "We do not trust you bleddy Indians."

This isn't just about the high-profile apartment complexes but is actually adopted from high-security IT companies.  About a decade ago, I had to meet a few friends in a company in one such IT zone.  I could walk from my home and so I had no money or wallet or any id with me.  Luckily, just before I reached the gate, a friend was driving by, saw me, and took me inside the campus. No questions asked.  Otherwise, I'd have to go through a huge hassle to enter the campus.  There will be additional security at every corner and each company employs a few security guards themselves.  I began working for the company and wrote multiple times to the campus administration to fix the terrible experience visitors and candidates face at the gate.

Apparently, no "bleddy" Indians find it insulting and demeaning.  If security is a key concern, why can't they ensure it with a better user experience?

The answer lies in our inherited coloniality.   The Brits and then the neo-Brits treated every Indian as someone out to steal from the government.  For every transaction with the government, the bleddy Indian needs to prove that he's so and so and he is the rightful recipient of the product or service.  In the process, a few citizens learned a few tricks to trick the government.  There are fake identity cards, duplicate ration cards, fake caste certificates, fake degrees, etc.  It went beyond fake documentation and there were innovative ways to cheat - like making phone calls from a friend's office, bribing the telephone linesman for unmetered calls (remember Jaspal Bhatti's famous episode on Lineman Damaad), and something as cheap as using a coin tied to a string to make free phone calls from coin-operated booths.

The government treated people with distrust and some people proved that the government was right by their actions.

Technology began to change things.  Cheating for a phone call has almost disappeared with an intermediate step of missed call messaging.  Positive human interaction is beginning to show up in a few places. The ticket examiners in trains do not insist on seeing the passenger's identity card if he is convinced that the passenger is genuine.

Why can't apartment complexes and IT companies improve the user experience?  A simple note-book based entry and exit is probably sufficient in most cases.  Businesses may need to do ID and purpose validation.  But all these changes are possible only if the enforcer wishes to treat other Indians as equals.

When will we get there?
